And The Glow’ting Begins…
Enough with the snow. The copious amounts of snow being removed from the Koons Toyota Garage on Saturday:
Now for a little Back To The Future. Back on Feb 5, before the snow was all that was anyone’s mind, the switch was flipped for the lights. Here is a “before” and “after”:
One of the last steps to completion is repaving the area between the Koons service bay and the garage. Here the base is being laid down:
County Installs Crosswalk; Cars Humored

Paving on Lee Hwy and 21st finished up today and was topped off with quite visible crosswalk. I suppose it makes a statement much like one of those “cause” ribbons. Apparently they are every bit as effective helping people too. At the Neighborhood Conservation meeting this month Wayne Wentz, Arlington County’s Bureau Chief of Traffic Operations noted that studies show more pedestrians get maimed and killed in crosswalks than on roads without them. I never thought about it much before I heard that but it does makes since even if it is counterintuitive. Pedestrians get lulled into the “official” sanctuary of crosswalks whereas drivers don’t place any particular meaning to them at all; i.e., that they are a visual cue to slow down. So for everyone who will be using this crosswalk especially, just pretend it doesn’t exist.
OK, off the soapbox there is lots of new around. First Lee Hwy. Rejoice, especially if you live on the Lee Hwy side Barrington II. The now smooth road means you no longer need a seatbelt to keep you in your seat when buses and big truck wiz by. Of course there is still the matter of pile driving so don’t toss that seatbelt away just yet.
The last time 21st Rd was paved Teddy Roosevelt was probably President. And of course until now it has never had that modern invention known as curb and gutter…or sidewalk. But now, well, it’s all 21st century for 21st Rd. They even have FIOS. Woooooooooo.
