The fire station 3 site selection process wore on the Cherrydale neighborhood for nearly two decades. The county, admittedly, let a perfect site next to the current fire station, now known as the Bromptons, slip away. Other less desireable, but acceptable options were rejected because of cost or concern about engine response time. What was ultimately foisted onto the neighborhood was a corner of car dealer’s parking lot that overlooks busy Old Dominion Dr. Many have questions the efficacy of the site but the lot will be excavated to accommodate the new 4 bay fire station. It will be the station in the hole. Done. The goal of this blog is not to re-debate where the fire station should have gone, but to follow its construction how the neighborhood changes with it.

There are 3 major phases to the construction: 1) re-routing of 21st road which sits where the dealership’s new garage will be build (to compensate them for the loss of the lots the county will take for the fire station), 2) construction of the dealership’s garage on “old” portion of 21st road, and 3) construction of the the fire station itself. This blog will document each phase and, of course, show lots of “before” and “after” pics and video so the “progress” can really be appreciated.

The idea for this blog is based on two other one’s I like to visit. The first focuses on the demolition of Las Vegas hotels called LeavingLV.net. The other one, JDland focuses on the construction of the Washington Nationals new ballpark as well as the S.E. DC revitalization. One is an homage to the past, the other anticipation of the future. It is these two qualities I hope are the signature of this blog.
